Dyna Adjustable Shifter Linkage

Back in 06 HD did a big reworking of their Dyna models. In this change came a new style of shifter linkage for all of the mid control Dynas. They went from an adjustable shift link to a fixed or non adjustable style and replaced the heim and ball joints to a machined rod with two ball joint style fittings.

This design very early on showed itself to us and our local riders to be a weak point. We had just about all or our customers who in 10,000 miles on their new Dyna mid shift assemblies, or less for those who tend to shift with authority, complain that the link itself simply just came apart. What was happening was the ball joint that was inside the adjustable rod would wear over time and the hole and stud relationship would become so sloppy that the clip holding the stud in place could no longer do it’s job and the parts would separate from each other. Usually this would happen at a really convenient time, normally around a half hour from home, which would leave the customer trying to limp home in a single gear of their choice. This simple problem sometimes left the customer with another problem, they would slip the clutch heavily when accelerating from a stop because they usually would pick third gear so that they could go fast enough when road conditions allowed, and by the time they got home it was time to get a new set of clutch plates as well.

After the customer got home in they next few days they would make it down to their local Harley Davidson dealer to pick up a new shifter linkage. Most would be shocked to find that this zink plated replacement part would run them between $50-75 depending on the dealer and their model.Westared making a new stainless adjustable shift linkage for the new Dynas for a few reasons. One so the link could be adjustable, this would allow you to fine tune the location of your shift lever to fit your needs depending on your foot size and type of boots/shoes you wear. We then wanted to make them as indistructable as possibe so that these storys of being stranded for this simple part could be eliminated. Also because we knew we could make a better and much stronger part for less money.

The links all have a center stud machined from precision ground 304 stainless steel, this gives a hassle free life. Free of the worry of oxidation or pealing chrome, all of the hardware as well comes in stainless. There are two choices when it comes to the Heim joints for the Dyna adjustable shifter linkage, you can choose either a full stainless heim joint or a chromoly version. The chromoly version is nickel plated for good looks and is about the strongest joint money can buy, this is the best choice for the agressive rider. The industrial stainless joints are very strong as well and can be polished up for that more show style finish. Both of these versions can be found in our on line store at:

For those of you with Dynas earlier than 06 we also make the same style link for you as well, the factory length is slightly linger so be sure to order for the correct year for proper fitment. If you have a custom size on a custom build we can make these up for you as well, the custom length shifter linkage will me made of the same high quality materials as our production ones but to your exact spec. For those customers who have an adjustable link but have some heims that are just wearing out, a common problem on many other models, we also can sell you just the replacement heim joints/ spherical rod ends.

For those local customers who had their links break at around 10,000 miles 4-5 years ago, we are happy to report that some of them are now up to 50,000 miles with no problem after installing our new links.
